How to Get Descovy for $0

If you have commercial insurance

Your insurer must cover Descovy at $0 for PrEP under the ACA. If there's any copay, use the Gilead Copay Savings Card, which covers up to $7,200 per year in out-of-pocket costs. Most patients pay nothing.

If you're uninsured

Apply to Gilead Advancing Access MAP for free Descovy. Eligibility is based on income (generally up to 500% FPL). No SSN required. Call 1-800-226-2056 or visit gileadadvancingaccess.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Descovy so expensive?
Descovy is a brand-name drug made by Gilead Sciences. The list price reflects R&D costs and the U.S. pharmaceutical pricing system. However, with insurance or assistance programs, most people pay $0.
Is generic Descovy available?
Not yet. Descovy (emtricitabine/TAF) is still under patent. Generic Truvada (TDF/FTC) is available for $30–60/month and is an equally effective PrEP option for most people.
Descovy vs. Truvada for PrEP — which is better?
Both are highly effective. Descovy has a slightly better kidney and bone safety profile. Truvada (generic) is dramatically cheaper if you're paying cash. If you have insurance, both are $0, so discuss with your provider which is best for you.
What if my insurance won't cover Descovy?
If your insurer covers generic TDF/FTC but not Descovy specifically, they may be within their rights to use step therapy. However, if they charge you for any PrEP medication, file a complaint. The Gilead copay card can cover any remaining costs.
