Why People Switch
Common reasons for changing PrEP providers include:
- Clinic closed or reduced services (increasingly common with federal funding cuts)
- Moved to a new city
- Lost insurance or changed plans
- Want the convenience of telehealth and home delivery
- Unhappy with current provider's service or wait times
- Privacy concerns at a local clinic
Step-by-Step: How to Switch
Step 1: Gather your information
Before contacting a new provider, collect:
- Your current PrEP medication name and dosage
- Date of your last HIV test (required within 3 months)
- Most recent lab results (kidney function, STI screening)
- Any prescription refills remaining at your pharmacy
Step 2: Contact your new provider
If switching to telehealth (like MISTR): sign up and share your PrEP history during the intake. Most telehealth platforms can access your pharmacy records electronically. If switching to a clinic or doctor: schedule an appointment and bring your lab records.
Step 3: Transfer your prescription
Your new provider will write a new prescription. You don't need to formally "transfer" the old one, though you can ask your pharmacy to do so if you have refills remaining. Make sure there's no gap — ideally, overlap by starting with the new provider before your last refill runs out.
Step 4: Lab schedule
Your new provider will review your most recent labs. If they're current (within 3 months), you may not need new tests immediately. If it's been longer, they'll order labs as part of the transition.

| Telehealth | Local doctor | Request records from telehealth, schedule appointment |
