How we rate PrEP providers

The criteria behind every comparison on FreePrEP.org, in the order they count.

Updated October 6, 2026

What counts, in order

  1. 1. Cost to you

We add up all four costs: medication, lab tests, clinician visits and, for shots, the injection visit. We call a service "$0" only when all four can be $0 for typical patients.

  2. 2. What's covered

Oral PrEP, injectable PrEP, at-home lab kits, STI testing, DoxyPEP and follow-up care.

  3. 3. Who can use it

States served, help for people without insurance, language access, and support for people under 18 where state law allows.

  4. 4. Transparency

Published prices, clear insurance rules and a readable privacy policy.

  5. 5. Ease of use

How quickly you can go from sign-up to prescription, and how refills and follow-up testing work.

How we check

We start with each provider's own published terms, then compare them with manufacturer program rules and public health guidance. When we can't confirm a claim, we say so. Provider tables are listed alphabetically unless the page says it's ranked by these criteria.

What doesn't count

Payment. Sponsored placements are labeled, kept separate and never change a rating or the order of a comparison. See our editorial policy.

When ratings change

We update a comparison when a provider changes its prices, coverage or ownership. For example, Grindr announced on October 2, 2026 that it will acquire PurposeMed, the company behind Freddie. We'll review Freddie's terms when the deal closes.
