Wake County saw 161 new diagnoses in 2024 — up 13.3% from 2023. Black/African Americans represent 56.5% of newly diagnosed individuals in Wake County. Hispanic/Latine rates are increasing (30/100K in 2024). HIV diagnosis rates in high-poverty areas (29.0/100K) are nearly 4× those in lowest-poverty areas (7.8/100K).

Know Your Rights

Minor Consent

NC G.S. 90-21.5 allows minors of any age to consent to STI/HIV testing and treatment. The 2023 Parents' Bill of Rights did not change STI consent provisions.

Insurance Coverage

Private insurance must cover PrEP at $0 under ACA (confirmed by Braidwood v. Becerra, June 2025). Medicaid covers PrEP at $0 including labs and visits.

Pharmacist PrEP

North Carolina authorizes pharmacists to prescribe PEP. PrEP pharmacist authority status is evolving — check with your pharmacist.

Gender-Affirming Care

HB 808 (2023) bans gender-affirming care initiation for minors. PrEP access is not affected. PATH Program (Charlotte) provides financial assistance for trans healthcare.
